Cirque is a social network sites that intended for fashion designers and fashion lovers. They can share endless fashion experiences by posting their fashion photos, sharing information about various kind of fashion styles, blog for the latest news, join with the society, and they can also ask for advice from the community about the latest style or even to find the best shopping bargain.

For Cirque we implement insoshi framework, a Ruby on Rails based social networking platform.

There are social networking sharing capabilities (such as to Facebook, Digg, etc)

• Using Vpim gem to write a vcard.
• Modify vpim lib to create a vcard that match MS Outlook specifications
• Using Gmail IMAP, POP3 to download email from Gmail account to the web application.

As expected, registrations and the landing pages are on HTML, and when user logs in she'll experience the Flex application. This means we integrated the Rails session, and the Flex session, so that Flex knows if a user is already logged in on the Rails app, and vice versa.

The application is meant for designers and architects to store, view, and share their works (CAD, SWF, PSD, PDF, all movie types, all Office types, all image types)

Interesting technologies experienced / developed include:

• Using Cairngorm architecture for the Flex development
• RubyAMF as the communication gateway between Flex and RoR
• Universal thumbnail generator for the file types mentioned above. Interestingly to make a thumbnail out of a CAD file, we need to use a Windows executable and run it on the Linux server that runs the RoR app.
• Integrating with Scribd. Supported files uploaded will also be uploaded to Scribd.
• Using rest-client gem, so that Ajax updater can access a different site

• Using Ext JS, which is a cross-browser JavaScript library for building rich internet applications
• Using prawn instead of pdf-writer gem which is scheduled to be deprecated. 
• Using capistrano to configure server. Yes, we can use capistrano to update apache conf, update cron job, etc.
• erubis instead of erb, much faster.
• Using nkallen-cache-money, which is used, developed, released by twitter to scale a Rails application

Before rolling out the full website car-racing application to the market, this startup company made us built the facebook version of the application as a marketing strategy.

The application is built in early 2008, using the rfacebook plugin. It's a cool social car racing application where users can race each other, get points if win, modify their cars, or buy a new car. This facebook app uses iframe; but we can do pure FBML as well.

There are a lot of interesting things in this project

• Because we want to be DRY, the facebook app acts as a REST consumer only (using ActiveResource) and minimally uses database, and the main website as the REST server.
• In so doing, the controller and model methods mostly calls a REST web service, and thus we have to mock and stub our tests, using Mocha.
• Also, since the application calls two web services (the main app and Facebook API), it feels slow. Thus we use starling to boost performance. For example, updating facebook profile on the background after a certain action.
• The client wants an accompanying myspace app (although eventually the myspace app was canceled). Same RoR code, but different response if called from MySpace. Also, the myspace app needs to enable users to login using their facebook account. We do this using Facebook Connect.
