The customer is an internet entrepreneur in Japan. He approached us late 2006, and had been working with us until recession hits Japan in early 2009.

He built mobile applications to sell to his customers, with Ruby on the backend, and Flashlite on the frontend. We helped him on both ends, Ruby and Flashlite.

What's interesting, Ruby on Rails-wise:

• We worked with other teams across the world (Eastern Europe, Latin America) that the client also hired besides us.
• We port over the older version in Ruby on Rails to Merb. I dont know if this is a good decision since now there'll be Rails 3.x
• Processing incoming emails that are received on the server via a Ruby script
• An emphasis on writing good and thorough Rspec
• Multi-language capability using gettext, and later moved to gibberish.
• The client even asks our developer to write Applescripts for screenshot-ing the Rails application

This application is a unique project management tool for software developers that one of our clients ask us to do it back in late 2007.

There are many new things that we learned, such as:

• Javascript slider
• Using rcov to achieve 80% test coverage
• Loading fixtures to tables with foreign key restrictions
• Even simple things like validating email format, captcha, and loading data via migration

In the end the project doesnt seem to sell well so we stopped but continued working on the client's other projects.

An online fanclub site offers free video clip downloads for its members.

What we did is a separate application from the fanclub site that serves this video downloads securely.

The video clips, whose each size could be up to hundreds of MB, is uploaded via the admin area using SWFUpload, so that the uploader can see upload progress bar.

Members can then download these video clips. Using BitGravity CDN service, we make sure the download links expire within a short time frame and with a secret hash. This is so that unauthorized users cannot download the video clips.

This is a site that plays professional video contents in a TV like format. In early 2007, we had the chance to work on the initial mockup of the site that involves both Ruby on Rails and ActionScript coding.

There are numerous Flash files, one for each channel, and each of them needs XML feeds from the Rails application. We built a dynamic XML feed builder that can cater to all of the Flash files.

Another interesting thing is that we used ActiveScaffold on this project.
